Yoshika's back for another turn at Staff Picks, this time taking inspiration from holidays in Kamakura, Japan. Located just an hour South-West of Tokyo in Kanagawa Prefecture, Kamakura is a popular holiday destination for those seeking refuge from the urban bustle of Tokyo. Kamakura is most famous for its architectural heritage, with a dense concentration of Buddhist temples and Shinto shrines, in addition to its beach, making it an ideal place to spend a few days relaxing, walking and exploring. Yoshika's picks are perfectly suited to this environment, with breezy linen sitting nicely alongside some comfortable footwear and a few travel essentials.
1. Caruso per Trunk Plaid Shirt Jacket
- Yoshika: Light weight, easy to wear with jeans or summer trousers. I like the three patch pockets and casual straight cut style. Also good for the evening time in a smart restaurant.
2. Incotex Slim Cotton Linen Chino
- Y: The colour combination of brown and navy is one of my favourites in summer. Goes well with the Caruso jacket.
3. Merz b. Schwanen Army Shirt
- Y: The Merz Army Shirt is a smart looking t-shirt, and a really authentic circular knit tee with no side seams. It is one of my favourite t-shirts for all year round.
4. Bresciani Ribbed and Plain Cotton Socks
- Y: I'm a bit fussy about socks generally, but Bresciani socks are reliable. They not only have an elegant look, using high quality Egyptian cotton, but are really comfortable and durable.
5. Birkenstock Boston Suede
- Y: If you have a pair already, you’ll know that these are such comfortable shoes. They would be perfect for a day walking around Kamakura. I also like the idea of wearing them with Levi’s 501 or 519s and button down shirts - my basic summer look.
6. Postalco Travel Wallet
- Y: I have been looking for a nice travel wallet for long time. This one is going to age well, with its combination of calfskin leather and pressed cotton. I’d keep some postcards to send to friends and family from holiday.
7. Marius Fabre Savon de Marseille
- Y: It's a good idea to bring a small soap for travel. Savon de Marseille protects from dehydration after washing and is good for all skin types. It's also good for clothes – sometimes I like to refresh my favourite handkerchief or scarf when I stay in a hotel. Another good use is to easily remove small stains from your shirt or trousers, so it's great to keep in your bags for little emergencies.
Yoshika's Recommendations:
– Houkokuji: This is a well known Bamboo garden temple. You can have a little sweet and some Matcha green tea while you enjoy the fantastic view.
– Tsurugaoka Hachiman-gū: If you go to Kamakura, Iʼd recommend going to to Tsurugaoka Hachiman-gū, one of the most important Shinto shrines. It is a large place with two museums – You can also see typical Japanese Buddhist architecture and a beautiful Japanese garden.
– Moyai Kogei: This is the one of the joys of going to Kamakura. There are many beautiful folk crafts: pottery, glassware, wood work, furniture and so on. If you like this sort of Japanese style, it is really worth a visit.
